The Blue Anchor @Anchors Drop in Blue Anchor
This chimney sweep involves sweeping a medium sized open fire in a local pub, it had a large opening to the chimney which narrowed towards the top. The fireplace itself was open with only a grate and back plate, which made it easier to see inside the chimney.
Preparing for the sweep
I took time to thoroughly cover the surrounding area and carpets with plastic sheeting to prevent any rogue soot particles from getting on the furniture.
I used rigid rods fed through a cotton canvas sheet that was sealed with tape around the recess, so that any soot dropping from the chimney would not escape into the room.
The Chimney Sweep
This was a great sweep through a long straight chimney, it had a fine consistency of soot. Clearly the owners have use the correct dry fuel and regularly had it swept. It was quite a high chimney and required 10 rods to get to the top. I also used a hepa filtered hoover to catch any fine soot particles. I sweep from the top down, and thoroughly sweep up and down while removing one rod at a time. Once the last one is down I take down the sweep-through sheet. I sweep up the soot that has accumulated at the bottom of the fireplace using a dustpan and brush.
After the sweep
Once the sweep was complete I swept off the backplate and the grate and placed them back on the hearth. I completed a smoke evacuation test which resulted in a good draw. While tidying away I took special care to remove the sheeting, sealing the recess in order to keep any soot within the plastic so not drop any onto the floor. The sheets were then removed from the furniture and everything tidied away. I then issued an ICS sweeping certificate.
They were lovely owners and it was a great sweep, I will look forward to my next sweep with them.
The Blue Anchor @Anchors Drop opens this Friday 1st July.
